68 Km southeast of Rodez and 7 Km from Millau, Peyre offers a magnificent view of the highest viaduct in the world. With a background of tufa cliffs, Peyre became, in 2003, the tenth village in the Aveyron to be listed among the most beautiful in France
One of the most picturesque villages in the Aveyron, Peyre establishes an astonishing link between the beauty of its old stones and the technological prowess of the Millau viaduct. These two neighbours, only a few kilometres apart, seem to regard each other from beyond the centuries.
Located on the banks of the Tarn, the village of Peyre looks as if it is sculpted in the overhanging cliff face. This little village is remarkable on many accounts, and particularly its houses made of tufa, its stairway streets and its half troglodyte church.
Set in a cavity in the cliff, the church of Saint Christopher is of Romanesque origin and was fortified in the 17th century. It is a strange mixture of defence elements: gatehouses, clubs, guns, etc. This edifice, unique in Aveyron, was recently restored by the Community of Communes of Millau Grands Causses. The stained glass windows are by E. Chauche, a master glazier in Millau.
If Peyre has to be seen at the same time as the viaduct, the village should also be included in a stay or a tour of the beautiful surroundings. There is the historical centre of Millau of course, but also the Templar villages of Larzac, the gorges of the Tarn or else the gorges of the Dourbie and the Roquefort cellars.
You will find many suggestions for circuits on the Millau Tourist Bureau website.
