La Cavalerie: at the crossroads of ancient roads
La Cavalerie, just minutes away from Millau Viaduct, occupies a strategic position, historically at the meeting point of various ancient roads leading south to the Mediterranean and today close to both the A75 autoroute and the N9 highway.
Built in the centre of the fertile Temple Plain, La Cavalerie was badly damaged during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century.
Thanks to a remarkable restoration campaign carried out in recent years, La Cavalerie has now regained its former splendour. The guided tour, which takes you along the restored parapet walk above the ramparts, gives you a unique view of the village and its architecture: the fortified town gate, the round towers at the corners of the town wall, the remains of the 12th century former church, 15th century houses and the fine little town houses that mark the period of the Larzac's revival in the 17th century.
